About This History of Stafford Savings Bank

The Stafford Savings Bank was granted its corporate charter by the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut on July 16, 1872.  Two days later the bank was opened for business in the office of the Stafford National Bank and received its first deposit of $400.  This building was located on the corner of Main Street and East Main Street.

In 1877, with the breaking of the dam on Staffordville Lake, the Stafford National Bank building and its contents were washed away.  Stafford Savings Bank occupied temporary quarters while a new building was being constructed in the same location by the Stafford National Bank.  This bank was succeeded in 1888 by the First National Bank of Stafford Springs, and the Stafford Savings Bank shared their offices until 1905.

At that time the Savings Bank of Stafford, whose offices were in the Warren Block on the corner of Main Street and Spring Street, merged with the Stafford Savings Bank.  The Stafford Savings Bank moved from the First National Bank office to the Warren Block.  It remained in this location for the next twenty-three years.

In May of 1928, the Stafford Savings Bank moved to its own new building on Furnace Avenue, where they are located to this day.    The two-story neoclassical building was designed by the Thomas Marriot James Company of Boston and built by E. J. Cross of Worcester. Mass.  In 1971 and 1972, the building underwent an extensive interior renovation including updated lighting, air conditioning, walnut paneling, an enlarged teller area, and new furnishings to provide a more efficient and pleasant banking experience for its many customers.

More than 150 years after its founding in 1872, the Stafford Savings Bank remains a leader in the banking industry for the residents and businesses of Tolland County, providing its services at three different locations.  Besides the Main Office, located at 2 Furnace Avenue, there are also two additional locations.  The Plaza Branch, located in the Stafford Shopper’s Plaza at 85 West Stafford Road, was opened in 1977.  The Centre Branch, which opened in 1989, is located in the Brookside Centre at 74 West Stafford Road.
